Obituary of William A. "Bill" Schweitzer

William A. “Bill” Schweitzer passed away on Wednesday January 25, 2017 in the comfort of his home. Born in Buffalo, he was the son of the late William and Henrietta Schweitzer. He was predeceased by his first wife of 46 years, Olga Schweitzer, sister Mary Ann Fliss, and baby sister Shirley Schweitzer. At the age of 18, Bill enlisted in the Marine Corps and served during the Korean conflict. After the service he started working for the New York Central, Penn Central, and then Conrail, starting as a mail boy and retired as a risk manager in 1992 after 42 years. He moved to Clifton Park in 2002 and enjoyed traveling with his wife in his retirement. A full and healthy life was ended with a diagnosis of cancer which he bravely fought. He was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League and the American Legion Post 1450 in Halfmoon, and the Adirondack chapter of the Korean War Veteran’s. Bill and his friends worked to build a Marine Corps Museum in Buffalo. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Judith Schweitzer, his sister Arlene Schulte, brother-in-law’s Raymond Fliss and Robert Tomczak, step-daughter Christine (John McGuire) Maurer, step-son David (Audrey) Maurer, and two adored grandchildren, David and Amy Maurer. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families. A gathering will be held on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. with a service at 11 a.m. at the Catricala Funeral Home Inc., 1597 Route 9, Clifton Park. Burial will follow at the Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
