Robert Dyer Obituary

After a week which included signature humor, laughter, and smiling blue eyes; fortified by the sacraments and prayers of the Church, Robert J. Dyer passed into eternal life at St. Peter's hospital early in the morning of September 7th. Bob was born to Francis B. and Elizabeth Snyder Dyer on May 30th 1939 in Albany N.Y. He graduated from Blessed Sacrament School '53 and Vincentian Institute '57. Bob served in the National Guard. As a young man he delivered the Times Union and twice won awards as a paperboy for gains in subscriptions. One award made Bob an eyewitness to history as he saw the great catch of Willie Mays on September 29th, 1954, in Game 1 of the Worls Series at the Polo Grounds. Bob worked for many years for the N.Y. State Department of Motor Vehicles. He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and served as past 4th District Commander. He took many Legion road trips to conventions with the love of his life, Patricia Thelen, to whom he was married for 57 years. He enjoyed time at the Legion Post, trivia nights, and his vegetable boxes at home. In recent years at the Teresian House he liked card games, book nook organizing, and sharing laughs with residents and staff.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved Patricia and their two children, Richard Dyer and Heather Daniels. He was also predeceased by his sisters: Margaret Leonhardt and Mary Pearson. Survivors include his brother John F. Dyer, and sister Catherine D. Payne, several nieces and nephews, son-in-law Tom Daniels and sister-in-law Carolyn Smith.

In recent years Bob's days were enlivened by visits from his faithful friend since first-grade at Blessed Sacrament School, Kevin Justice, and from after Mass visits by Fr. John Bradley, former pastor and native of Blessed Sacrament parish.

The family offers thanks to the staff of St. Peter's Hospital for assisting Bob in his last earthly days. We also thank his fellow residents at Teresian House, the staff, the Carmelite Sisters of the Aged and Infirm, and especially Emily Cassin for all their kindness to Bob.

A Mass of Christian Remembrance will be offered Friday September 12th at 11 O'clock a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church 607 Central Ave. Albany, N.Y. at the St. Joseph altar. Enter by way of parking lot.

Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to Blessed Sacrament School 607 Central Ave. Albany, N.Y. 12206
