Obituary of Harvey S. Hayner
Please share a memory of Harvey to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Halfmoon – Harvey S. Hayner, 89, entered into eternal rest on January 30, 2025, at his home with his family by his side.
Harvey was born in 1935 in Schenectady, New York, the son of the late Millard A. and Addie M. (Anthony) Hayner and was preceded in death by his sister Irene Boynton. He is survived by many family members whose presence brought him the happiest moments of life, beginning with his beloved wife, Carol J. (Keeler), the love of his life for 65 years of marriage; their three sons: Kenneth (Sharon) Hayner, Norman (Deana) Hayner, and Craig (Carolyn) Hayner; their grandchildren: Evan (Danielle), Jessica (Jordan), Ashley (Justin), Joshua (Rachel), Nicole, Emily (Nate), Rebecca, Luke, and Joel, all of whom he loved traveling to watch play and participate in their extensive sporting and arts activities; several great grandchildren, his sister Marjorie Madsen along with many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Harvey grew up on the Hayner family farm in Halfmoon as a proud fourth generation dairy farmer. In 1974, he took over the farm from his father and took great pride in expanding the dairy barn footprint and stewarding the land and farm animals throughout his entire life. A man of conviction and principle, Harvey loved operating farm machinery, working his vegetable garden, and most of all, growing and selling sweet corn on his roadside stand. He created quality products and put care and thought into everything he did which continues to this day in the entrepreneurial pursuits on the family farm of his three sons and grandchildren. Equally important, he and Carol feel truly blessed to have many wonderful farming friends and neighbors whose genuine care and support have meant so much to them throughout the years and to this day.
For grades 1-8, Harvey attended Newtown School, a one-room schoolhouse on Fellows Road in Halfmoon, and graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1953. From there, he drove school bus for the Shenendehowa school district for 43 years until his retirement in 1999. He thought it important to greet all his students by name, and his welcoming demeanor and positive impact and legacy would express itself in countless former students who fondly recalled him as their "kind/favorite bus driver" years later. His warm smile, kindness, sense of humor and incredible work ethic earned the respect of his co-workers and countless others throughout his lifetime.
Harvey was a lifetime member of the Shenendehowa Methodist Church. It is here that a period of visitation for him will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday February 5 (971 Route 146, Clifton Park, NY 12065). A funeral service will take place at the church the following day, February 6 at 11am. Burial will take place at the Clifton Park Center Baptist Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Harvey's memory to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 or Saratoga Hospital Foundation c/o the Palliative Care Department, 211 Church St, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
