Obituary of Mary E. "Chick" Chambers

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Elizabeth Chambers, or “Chick” as many of you knew her, passed away peacefully at home with her family on March 12, 2021 after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born in Astoria, New York on February 3, 1937 to Eva (Gilliland) and Alfred Rulffes. Mary grew up in Lynbrook, Long Island on Wood Street with her big brother Al. She attended Lynbrook High School where she played field hockey, volleyball and was a member of the Marching Band twirling her baton. After high school she attended SUNY Albany and was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. Over the years Mary worked at Barclay Home Products in Cohoes, Shenendehowa Central School, and the NYS Motor Vehicle Department in Saratoga County. Her friends introduced her to her husband Edward “Red” Chambers. Together they started a family and took numerous vacations in the family Volkswagen Bus. Mary was involved with the creation of Miss Shen Softball along with managing and coaching teams. Anyone who knows Mary knew of her love for birds, gardening and traveling. She went on many bird watching trips with her husband who also doubled as the photographer. Mary was always looking for a place to travel or cruise with family and friends and they will gladly share a story of the mischievous or funny exploits Mary would get them into. Mary was also an avid gardener and loved being outside tending to her flower gardens. In her spare time in the winter, she enjoyed bowling and clowning around with her friends at Latham Bowl. Mary was happy to have and felt fortunate for the long-time friends from the Watervliet gang. They were always there for each other through thick and thin. She was also glad to have formed so many lasting friendships and cherished memories of lunches and trips with the Mobil group. Mary was a vibrant lady who enjoyed life, adventures, and busting chops in a good humor way. Words cannot express how we will miss her smile, laughter and sense of humor, friendship, and love. Our love for her will live in our hearts forever and her spirit will live on through our memories and stories. Mary is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward H. Chambers; daughter Susan E. Chambers, son Edward (Karen) Chambers, brother Alfred H. (Nancy) Rulffes; grandson Brian E. (Danielle) Chambers, great grandchildren Jacob Parker and Lilly Grace Chambers; grandson Kyle F. (Sarah Katie) Chambers; and many nieces and nephews.
