To Dr. Cayan's wife, Jeri, and his entire family. It saddens me to know of Peter's passing, but the fond memories I will always have of him will last forever. He was one of the kindness, most caring individuals I have ever known. He was a true gentleman and a lover of education and students. He opened his home and heart to so many students, alumni, and faculty, he will never be forgotten.

Jeri and family,
Ron and I were so sorry to learn of Peter's death. He was a wonderful person who always made sure that when he was President he took the time to stay in touch with the students, faculty and staff.. This was so very much appreciated - more than you will know!! As Ron said in the Utica OD article, "“Peter Cayan led the institution during difficult times of transition. It was on his watch that the college finally secured a permanent campus. His calm demeanor was a stark contrast to the turbulence that characterized faculty-administration relations in the college’s earlier years. It was Peter Cayan, who in the time just before he retired, forged an agreement to allow the institution to become a full four-year college. Every day I am reminded of the key role that Peter played in the history of this college as I pass the library that bears his name.” and I would like to add a gentleman President".
Our sympathy goes out to you and your entire family and if there is anything we can do for you, please let us know. Our e-mail addresses are ron@sunyit.edu and pat@the-sarmers.info.
Peter with you at his side Jeri, had a fantastic 20 years as President of SUNYIT We reminisce over the truly great memories, that the two of you instituted on this campus..a few examples, the "giving tree", the faculty/staff luncheons designed to bring everyone together, the children's Christmas party just to name a few. We have 20 years of fond of memories of this institution and the visions that were accomplished. There was a "family community" when Peter was President and with you as our most gracious "first lady". This was a very special time for all of us and we thank Peter and you for making everyone feel like they were a special part of SUNYIT.
Again, our deepest condolences Jeri and family. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. May God's healing graces be with you,
Warm regards,
Ron and Pat Sarner

I was surely saddened in reading of Peter's death and send along my sincere condolences to Jeri and all family members.
Peter was a wise, gracious and generous colleague,
While President of SUNY Oneonta from 1988-2008, I had more than a few occasions to meet with Peter both socially and on business. At one point I reached out to him for advice regarding a pending evaluation. I remember his response was so reassuring and appropriate that I was able to forge ahead successfully in the review.
He represented the best of collegiality among fellow SUNY presidents.and it was his heartfelt kindness for all that remained a model for me.
God surely blesses you dear Peter. I will always feel fortunate to have had you as a fellow President.
Blessings

Peter Cayan was well respected by his SUNY presidential colleagues. He bridged the gap between the "old" SUNY and the "new." In the old days, Peter used to travel the state meeting personally with community college presidents to recruit students for SUNYIT. He was one of the few SUNY senior college presidents who would make that effort. In addition to his professional demeanor, Peter Cayan was always impeccably dressed and carried himself as a CEO should. He will be missed.
