Dr. Dodd was 3rd degree Taekwondo black belt holder who practiced the martial arts more than 10 years while the family lived in Huntington, WV. Not only he was an excellent black belt, but also he was a great instructor. I will miss him.

A typical Workout with Jack Dodd
Jack comes through the door with a big smile sporting his Navy blue sweat pants.
Judy is getting herself ready to workout. She takes her glasses off, makes sure her hearing aids are working. Jack says “how about your glass eye women”. Always said with unconditional love and respect for Judy.
The workout begins with Russian Twist. Jack quickly begins while talking in a Russian accent saying “this is how we sit in Russia”.
Second exercise will be Dead Bugs and I demonstrate. Jack says, “those should be called Dying Roaches”.
I loose count after a few rounds and ask, “is that 2 or 3”. Jack quickly responds “it was definitely 3B”.
Next part of workout:
Twin Peaks Presses - Black Lodge Dances
Orange is The New Black Punches - Grimm Runs
A few rounds in “ that was 2B or not to be.” Jack quickly say “this is going to be 3A”.
During this Judy continues to do V-Ups. Judy the bell rang, Judy we are done with V-Ups. Jack yells “hey lady we switched exercise 5 minutes ago”.
Next set will begin with Hollow Hold Flutter Kicks with Dumbbell Flies. I demonstrate while Jack observes and comments “Now those just look unpleasant”! He then begins doing the exercise stating “these are what I call Torture Kicks while flailing in a mud puddle”
Next up are Crab Toe Touches and I demonstrate one, Jack begins and says “now these just feel dumb”.
Moving on the next superset will be Single Leg Hip Ups. You will do set (A) with left leg only and set (B) with right leg only. After 3 sets I say “that was 3B”. Judy says “wait I think I only did 2 sets on my left”. I say” that’s fine, it won’t hurt you this time”, Judy says “but I don’t want to be lopsided”. Jack in a silly accent says “This is my lopsided wife Judy, she walks funny because she skipped a set of Hip Ups on her left side”.
In the mean time: Don’t you think it is weird to be so excited about cleaning your refrigerator on Thanksgiving Day. Where is *** when you need her to put the kettlebells away. Do you think Howard will join us again.
Last set to finish up. Plank Tap & Jacks - Mt. Climbers
I demonstrate… Jack, Jack/ Judy, Judy - Climb that Mountain
Round 2- Jack, Jack/Judy, Judy - Keep Climbing that Mt. You’re not to the top yet
Round 3 - Jack, Jack/ Judy, Judy - Keep Climbing lets get to the top
Jack ends by saying “I don’t know but that seemed harder than usual”. He said this after every workout for 5 years.
This was compiled form various funny statements, TV shows we enjoyed and funny conversations had over the years. Jack loved to come up with funny names and explanations for exercises. He often had comments that clearly denoted how he felt about that exercise but always did the exercise without complaint.
Jack Dodd was one of the smartest and most interesting people I have had the pleasure to know. He will always be a huge presence in the studio and I will continue to honor him by using his phases. He was a pro at push ups and box jumps but was game to do what ever I through at him.

Q: What will you never forget about Jack?
A: Dr Dodd was one of the best psychiatrist I have known. During rounds with patients he would sit facing each patient and patiently listen to his or her story. He always gave the best therapeutic responses with caring in his eyes and voice to each patient . He was always calm and so thoughtful. I have been a RN for many years and he was an amazing teacher and spirit. Regards to family, Grant McCosh RN

My deepest condolences to your whole family. I am one of the nurses who was able to work with Dr. Dodd for only the last year and a half but respected him and genuinely liked him as a person. It was obvious that he had a very caring heart and was a wonderful professional. The obituary was beautifully written and gave me insight into this wonderful man who was a student of Life! Although the days ahead are going to be more than difficult, think of the amazing memories you all have! Gone too soon for sure, but a fine example of how one should live their life!
