Obituary of Robert T. Husted

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Robert T. “Bob” Husted, age 85 of Rexford passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Born on August 13, 1937, he was the son of the late Tileston and Henrietta Husted, and was predeceased by his brother Frank Richard Husted.

Bob graduated from Springfield College with a B.S. in Physical Education, and took graduate courses at SUNY Oneonta, University of Colorado, Union College, and UAlbany.

He spent his career as a science teacher in the Mohonasen School District, where he also coached track and was an assistant football coach. He loved to take trips to the beach in Maine with his wife and enjoyed going skiing in Vermont. Bob was an avid runner and finished the Boston Marathon 7 times; one time after having survived open heart surgery. He continued to compete in road races even after needing a pacemaker. He was a passionate Notre Dame football fan and made several trips to South Bend, Indiana to see his Fighting Irish play. He was a longtime member of Christ Community Reformed Church in Clifton Park.

One of Bob and Barbara’s favorite pastimes was skiing. Bob remembers Barbara’s second time out. “we went to Killington in Vermont and I took Barbara to Killington Peak which was over 4,000 feet and led her down a difficult trail. She was only snowplowing at the time, I thought that I was going to have a few laughs. To my surprise, she did very well. From then on, Barbara became a good intermediate skier. Her form and style were excellent and I have to admit that in time Barbara became a better skier than me.”

Together they skied many of the 10 smaller ski area in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine. Barbara’s favorite ski area was Stowe, VT and they took off almost every weekend to travel to Stowe. Barbara loved the sunrise trail and Bob liked the nose dive.

One of Bob’s favorite ski areas was Sugarloaf, Maine. During the Blizzard of ’93, he was trying to ski down the mountain in waist deep snow. They especially enjoyed the trail called tote road, and took it each run.

Another of their favorite pastime was spending summers in Maine at Ogunquit Beach and using their boards to ride the waves. The water was very cold but they enjoyed the fun and loved the delicious seafood.

As they grew older, Bob and Barbara found Gore Mountain to be a less stressful drive to enjoy one of their favorite sports. Bob skied until his 80’s and Barbara skied until age 75.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years; Barbara Husted, 3 turtles, and many friends.
