James J. Nyers Sr. (Jim), (88), of Clifton Park, New York, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born to Joseph and Ann Nyers, on September 1, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio. Growing up, Jim was a talented athlete, accelerating in a variety of school sports, especially basketball. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid Detroit Lions fan, often attending games as a young boy. Jim graduated with a bachelor's degree from The University of Toledo in 1958. Jim began his career as an English teacher before working as a claims manager for Travelers Insurance for 30 years. Jim was passionate about giving back to the community and volunteered at food pantries for the Faith Baptist Church and the Schenectady Inner City Mission. In his free time, Jim loved to solve crossword puzzles, care for his plethora of plants, and drive his red Jaguar with "JIMS JAG" vanity license plates. Jim had a keen sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh and telling stories at family gatherings. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Marjorie Nyers, and his children; Christopher (Claudine) Nyers; Linda Barocsi; Steven Mitchell; Robert (Patricia) Mitchell and D. Michael Mitchell. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Peanut. He was predeceased by his son, James Nyers Jr. Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Catricala Funeral Home 1579 Route 9 Clifton Park, NY. Services are private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to The City Mission of Schenectady, PO Box 760, Schenectady, NY 12301.
