I have only great memories of Lance, many of them from my childhood, when we'd come visit from Austria. For some reason this one summer comes to mind, when him and Norma both tried to teach me how to throw a baseball correctly. I'm still lame at it, but not for their lack of trying.
We miss you and wish we could be there with you!
Love,
Philip and Anna

Dear Norma and family,
I am greatly saddened to have received news of Lance's passing. In the relatively brief time that I've known him I've come to appreciate him as a friend, avid historian, and an enthusiastic story-teller. In response to his seeing vintage Spallholz family photographs that I posted on the internet, on August 3, 2016, Lance wrote... "My brother and I are the grandsons of Henry A. Spallholz and we would very much like to know how you have the photos and information of the 1919 trans-continental trip". It was the receipt of this message (my first ever contact with Lance), that triggered an eight year association with Lance and Julian, and introduced me and my sister Susie to the rest of the Spallholz family. Although the majority of that association was through a multitude of emails, phone conversations, and only one visit to Round Lake, I greatly appreciate having had the opportunity to work with him and his brother on the book dealing with the story of the Spallholz journey that was taken over a century ago. I always appreciated the level of enthusiasm he expressed when discussing anything dealing with Round Lake, and especially anything "Spallholz". He was a font of historical minutiae, and I regret that I had not known and met him when he visited Cuttyhunk years ago. Having enjoyed his many stories about his ancestors and family history, it would have been a pleasure to provide a little "pay-back" with some stories of my own concerning my ancestors on the island.
He will be missed, but NEVER forgotten.

I met Lance as a Computer Science undergraduate at Union in the early 1980s. He was a generous and intelligent colleague, always encouraging to me, one of the few females in the department. He was excited about learning and a good role model. Hearing he was running the computer lab after we left made me very happy. I haven't seen him since, but felt after decades he was still a friend. Also extremely happy to see that George Williams continued to be a friend to him! George's and Dave Hannay's mentorship made all the difference to my time at Union. But that's another story... RIP, Lance, I am sure that the line of students grateful to you is very long.

Very sorry to hear of Lance’s passing. I was so happy that Lance was able to participate in Salem’s Fourth of July Parade as a team member of the great SWA 1964 Basketball team. Being able to reminisce about growing up in Salem was a great joy. I believe Lance had an enjoyable day.
Deepest Condolences to the Spallholz Family.

Julianna, Drue and Mrs. Spallholz,
I'm not sure if you'll remember me, but I remember you all fondly. Coming over to play when we were in elementary school, listening and singing along to Free to Be You and Me, the high school musicals - I have so many wonderful memories. Sometimes when you're so young, the Dad can be intimidating. Mr. Spallholz was never like that. He was kind, and maybe seemed a little dorky, but in the best of ways. Know that he'll always be remembered and thought of with fondness.

I recall walking by Lance's house when we went for walks with our dog, Jessup. When Hector was a little baby, we would stop by to visit Norma and Lance on that beautiful porch of theirs. Their Magnolia tree would be in full bloom. Lance was such a pleasant, friendly, welcoming, laconic host. Lance frequently extended the invitation to his season passes at Union college hockey games. During those years Union became the number one team in the country. He loved it. In later years, I remember the history presentations and his presence at birthdays, or fun beer Fridays. He was an old school Round Laker. We'll miss him.

Norma, Drue and Julianna,
So sorry to hear of Lances passing. I worked at Union for 43 years, the last 28 as registrar. I had many interactions with Lance about academic issues and he was always so congenial and approachable. I remember when he retired, he recalled such fond memories of being at Union, and of course, falling in love with his future wife.

I am saddened by the passing of Lance. He lit up the room with his presence and his stories. I have not forgotten how he loved to talk about meeting Norma. And how he bought her silver bells each year for Xmas. He was an amazing person and I am blessed to have known him.

Lance will truly be missed. He was a fount of knowledge and I learned so much from him during my time with him on the planning board. He was truly dedicated to making his community a better place to live and he did that in myriad ways. He is someone I look up to and hope to carry on the legacy of in continuing to make Round Lake such a special place to live. It is people like Lance that make the world a better place through kindness and action.
